Kuchipudi Workshop by Dr Vasanth Kiran at Thrissur, Kerala– A Report

Alliance University, Bangalore boasts of being one of the first private university to have department of performing arts and what makes it more special is that it offers courses in Kuchipudi, with the aim to promote and propagate the greatness in this art form. Torch bearer of this initiative and Head of Department of Performing Arts is Dr. Vasanth Kiran, Ph. D (Marketing), Ph. D (Performing Arts), who also is a faculty member in their prestigious School of Business offering courses in Marketing.



Kuchipudi Abhyasashaala, an initiative by Dr Vasanth Kiran, Head of Department of Performing Arts , Alliance University, Bangalore to promote and propagate the greatness of Kuchipudi was supported and accepted by Guru Geeta Padmakumar, a renowned Kuchipudi performer and teacher for several stars in Kerala. Dr Vasanth Kiran with the support of Geetha Padmakumar  conducted a two-day workshop organized by Natyanidhi Institute of Performing Arts, Bangalore and Padmam School of Kuchipudi, Kerala on 25, 26 June 2014  at Natyagruha, Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi, Thrissur, Kerala. The workshop inaugurated by senior art critic Prof. George Paul had participants from corners of Kerala including dance teachers, students from prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam and celebrities from big screen and mini screen like ManjuWarrier, Rachana Narayanakutty, Sonu and others.




Dr Vasanth started the workshop with Natyaramabhashloka and rigorous exercises, paadabhedas, steps and jathis from the great Guru Vempatti’s school of thought.  Students thoroughly enjoyed attending the 5 hour workshop each day which was accompanied throughout on Mridangam by Vidwan VijeshVallath, who is also a dancer.



Dr. Vasanth intends to conduct ‘KuchipudiAbhyasashaala’ and ‘Bharatanatyam Abhyasashaala’ all over the country and abroad too. He has a strong intention to make students pursue dance as a serious academic interest and is working hard on this.
