Thirayattam represents Kerala in the Second International Ethnic Folklore Festival 2016

Thirayattam, the ethnic performing folk art of South Malabar will represent Kerala in the 2nd edition of International Ethnic Folklore Festival to be held in New Delhi from 13 – 18 October 2016. According to officials, the festival show cases 10 international ensembles which include Thirayattam from Kerala and Bhangra dance from Punjab.



 A seven member team of Thirayattam artists headed by Moorkkanad Peethambaran from Kozhikode, participate in the event. Moorkkanad Peethambaran is a traditional performer of Thirayattam and performs in more than 70 temples festivals a year, as part of the ritual. He also conducts workshops and lecture -demos for students, artists and scholars. Peethambaran said that the team will perform five Thirayattam characters in the five days, during the event.

International Ethnic Folklore Festival is an initiative by Shrustii Multicultural Centre, a not- for- profit organization based at Delhi. The aim of the festival is to preserve the cultural heritage and thus promoting cultural tourism among participating country. (www.ieffindia.com)
