Samarpana Mohiniyattam Kalari organizes Mohiniyattam workshop by Guru Padmashri Bharati Shivaji at Thrissur

Guru Padmashri Bharati Shivaji
Samarpana Mohiniyattam Kalari in association with MVVSNS Trust presents five day Mohiniyattam workshop for Mohiniyattam students, teachers and other classical art performers from 18 May 2019 at Vellattanjur Sreerama Kshethra Vedi, Thrissur in Kerala.

The workshop exploring the aesthetics of ‘abhinaya’ in Mohiniyattam through the learning of an ‘Ashtapathi’, is led by Guru Padmashri Bharati Shivaji, the maestro of Mohiniyattam. Capturing the nuances of Bharati Shivaji’s style through glimpses of major Adavu-s and Mohiniyattam choreography through her perspective are the special features of this workshop. Another highlight of the workshop is the introduction to Kerala Thala Vadyam through Thala patterns in the percussion instrument Madhalam by Chalakkudy Narayanan Nambisan Jr.

Padmashri Bharati Shivaji
Padmashri Bharati Shivaji is a senior exponent of Mohiniyattam, the classical dance of Kerala. As a performer, choreographer, Guru and author, she was instrumental in popularizing this art form, especially outside Kerala and gave it a Pan-Indian viewership. Her research journey along with Late. Kavalam Narayana Panikkar has resulted in choreographies, influenced by the regional music style of Sopanam, Kerala Thaalams and Lasyam.

Samarpana Mohiniyattam Kalari
Samarpana Mohiniyattam Kalari based at Bangaluru (Karnataka) is a dance school dedicated to the teaching, learning and propagation of Mohiniyattam. Samarpana is a joint initiative by Vinaya Narayanan, the disciple of Padmashri Bharati Shivaji and by Lakshmi Girish, who is the disciple of Vinaya Narayanan. According to the promoters, at Samarpana the students are encouraged to perceive the art form as a Sadhana, a way of life rather than as a form of pure entertainment.

Formed 20 years ago in memory of the Madhalam percussionist Madhala Vidwan Vellattanjur Sankaran Nambisan, MVVSNS Trust based in Vellattanjur, a village near Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district, promotes Thaala Vadyam and other classical art forms.
