The book Sopanatatvam is an in-depth coverage and presents to you the
scholarly treatise - Sopana Sangeetham,
the musical tradition of Kerala in particular. It also gives glimpses on the
performing arts and culture of Kerala. The original was written in Malayalam by Padmabhushan Kavalam Narayana Panikkar and
this is an English translation of this ground breaking treatise by Sulini V
Nair.
Kavalam Narayana Panikkar was a legendary Indian
playwright, author, theatre director, poet, lyricist and musicologist. He was
the founder director of the theatre group Sopanam and the Bhasabharathi Centre
for Performing Arts, Training and Research in Thiruvananthapuram. He served as
Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Vice Chairman of the Kendra
Sangeet Natak Akademi. His work in Theatre, film and music has won several
awards and his plays have toured noted festivals across the world. Government
of India honoured him in 2007 with the civilian award Padmabhushan.
Sulini is a researcher of traditional art forms of Kerala
and an accomplished exponent of Mohiniyattam, the classical dance form of
Kerala. In the preface to the book, Kavalam expresses his satisfaction about
the translation by Sulini that “Sulini, my dear student and a committed
Mohiniyattam exponent in her own right has done a remarkably brilliant job in
translating this book. Her dedication and conviction towards the Sopana style
of Mohiniyattam is commendable'.
This book will be an invaluable reference to students, as
well as aficionados of music, dance, performing arts and the cultural panorama
of Kerala.
