Onam Celebrations at Thiruvananthapuram

The statewide Onam celebrations by Kerala Tourism will be inaugurated by the honorable Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, on 12th Sept 2016 at  Nishagandhi Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala, India). In the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram, prior to the grand celebrations, the flag hoisting and switch on of illumination will be held at Kanakakunnu Palace compound on 11th Sept, 06.00 pm.


Various venues in the capital city will come alive in a cultural extravaganza of music, dance, drama and painting in the modern, traditional, folk and classical genres of Kerala from 12 to 18 September 2016.  Pancharimelam by Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar & team followed by the musical program 'Magical Melodies' presented by Times of India & Kairali will be the attractions of the the inaugural function held at the main venue, Nishagandhi Auditorium on 12 Sept.

Over 200 performances will be conducted at 30 different stages in the capital city Thiruvananthapuram. Nishagandhi auditorium, the main venue will host variety of  programs - dance & music.Central Stadium will be the venue for  mega shows by Malayalam TV channels and print media. Poojappura ground, Suryakanthi, Sree Chithira Thirunal Park, Kottakkakam and Public Office Compound will be the venue for Ganemela - Music Program. Women & Children program will be held at Shanghumukham. Folk Arts will be staged at  Thiruvarangu, Nattarangu, Sopanam and Sooryakanthi Mini stage (Kanakakunnu). The Kanakakunnu Palace Auditorium, Sangeethika, will stage classical music concerts. A Photo-Painting exhibition will be held at Kanakakunnu Akathalam from 13 to 18 Sept.


Theerthapadamandapam will be the venue for the traditional classical arts - Kathakali, Aksharaslokam, Koodiyattam and Koothu. Kathaprasangam and programs by Transgenders will be held at Gandhi Park. VJT Hall will stage Kathayarangu, Kaviyarangu & Drama. Percussion music will be held at Kanakakunnu Gate. Yoga & Kalarippayattu will be staged at Museum Compound and Athapookkalam (Floral Mat) competition will be conducted at Govt Women's College, Vazhuthakkad. Classical Dance will be staged at Vylopilly Samskrithi Bhavan andVylopilly Open Air (NoopuraMandapam). Dramas will be held at University College Compound. Besides this, varoius programs will be held at Peeroorkkada, Sreevaraham, Veli Tourist Village, Nedumangad Parking Yard Compound, Mudavoorpara Boat Club Compound, Kazhakoottam Kottaram Compound, Attingal Muncipal Office Compound and Neyyantingara Muncipal Stadium.

In addition to these 30 venues, DTPC will also organise colorful events at the tourist destinations -Kovalam, Shanghumughom, Varkala, Aruvikkara, Neyyar Dam and Chirayinkeezhu. The celebrations will conclude with a festive procession from Kowdiar to Attakkulangara on 18 Sept.
